Herbs have played an essential role in civilization and in the history of nations. These are mostly used for better taste of processed foods and improve nutritional contents. In addition, they are known to possess various pharmacological and medicinal properties and therefore, find position in the development of a number of medicines. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the family zingiberaceae. It is an important horticulture plant with various medicinal importance. Due to its enriched phyto-chemistry, ginger has numerous health promoting properties. Ginger is also known to play role in controlling ageing process due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. Further, it has antimicrobial potential that can help in combating infectious diseases. In the present review, prospects and effects of ginger as an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and anti-oxidative agent have been briefly discussed.
