Integrative Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases aims to provide a home for all types of scientific communications related to the diabetes/cardiovascular interrelationship which include genetic, experimental, clinical, pharmacological, epidemiological, molecular biology and laboratory research. The impressive correlation between coronary artery disease and alterations in glucose metabolism has raised the likelihood that atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes may share common antecedents. The American Heart Association stated in 1999 that "diabetes is a cardiovascular disease". The worldwide frequency of the diabetes mellitus especially type 2, which makes up about 90% of the diabetic population, has continuously and rapidly increased over the last decades. Moreover, 25% of patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes already have coronary artery disease. Diabetes mellitus has become a diagnosis of considerable and ominous importance in cardiovascular medicine. Despite considerable improvements in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, there is alarming evidence that patients with diabetes have hardly experienced any advantages from recent therapeutic achievements compared with their non-diabetic counterparts.
